ThriveCart: Eight Years In, A Rocky Middle Chapter, and Where It Stands Today

I've been using ThriveCart since 2017. I was one of the original 15 ThriveCart Certified Experts. I watched it nearly collapse and I watched it come back. Here's my current, honest take.

I've had a longer relationship with ThriveCart than most people in this space. I was using it before most people knew what it was, I was processing serious client volume through it when things got rocky, and I was one of the people who had to stop recommending it during the dark years — and then had to reconsider when it stabilized.

That history matters because my take on ThriveCart is not a 90-day review. It's eight years of watching a platform go through founder departure, multiple ownership changes, a genuinely bad stretch, a recovery, and now a significant product expansion with ThriveAcademy.

The Short Version

Quick Answers

What is ThriveCart?
A SaaS checkout and funnel platform handling payment processing (via Stripe), order bumps, upsells, downsells, affiliate management, and subscription billing. With ThriveAcademy it now includes a community and course platform competing with Circle and Skool.
Who is it best for?
Beginners and intermediate sellers who want a simple, self-contained e-commerce and funnel platform. People who want simplicity above all else and whose primary need is checkout, funnels, and affiliates.
How much does it cost?
One bundled product — checkout and ThriveAcademy together. $47/mo Standard · $87/mo Pro+ (my pick) · Custom Enterprise (which I don't recommend), all with a 30-day free trial. A limited $495 one-time lifetime option (Standard only, no ThriveAcademy) still exists, but I don't recommend it either.
Is it worth it?
For the right use case, yes. If you need a simple, standalone checkout and funnel platform without building a full tech stack, ThriveCart makes sense — and now that the community and course platform is bundled in, you're getting more for the money. If you'd rather pay once, the $495 lifetime option is still one of the better deals in the space.
Free trial?
Yes — a 30-day free trial on the subscription plans. And through my affiliate link you also get my Tech Help community space (ask questions anytime, direct access to me) and my weekly live Q&A office hours as a bonus.
Section 03 — Foundations + History

What ThriveCart Is (and the History You Should Know Before You Buy)

ThriveCart is a checkout and funnel platform. At its core, it takes the complexity of building a Stripe checkout, adding order bumps and upsells, managing affiliates, and handling subscription billing — and packages all of that into a relatively simple SaaS interface. You don't need to be technical to use it. You don't need plugins or custom code.

That's been ThriveCart's value proposition since 2017, when I first started using it. Back then it was a one-time lifetime deal that felt almost too good to be true — and for a long time it was genuinely one of the best deals in the software space.

⚠ Context Worth Knowing

The Rocky Middle Chapter

The platform went through a genuinely difficult period after the original creator sold it. It changed hands multiple times. The original codebase was a mess and each ownership transition created new problems — downtime became frequent, Stripe connectivity was unreliable, support essentially disappeared for extended stretches, and people who had been loyal users were jumping ship.

During that period I stopped recommending ThriveCart. Outright. If someone asked me whether to buy ThriveCart during those years, I said no.

That era is behind us. The platform has stabilized. I've gone back to recommending it for the right use cases. But anyone buying ThriveCart deserves to know that history rather than discovering it after the fact.

The new ownership has made two significant moves. First, they moved ThriveCart off the pure lifetime deal and onto a subscription — the checkout platform and the new community/course platform bundled together, from $47/mo, with a single one-time lifetime option ($495 Standard) still hanging around for people who'd rather own it. Second, they built ThriveAcademy into that bundle, which puts ThriveCart in direct competition with Circle and Skool for the first time.

What the core platform does:

  • Checkout pages — clean, conversion-optimized, Stripe-powered across 100+ countries
  • Order bumps & upsells — unlimited bump offers, 1-click upsells and downsells, advanced funnel automation
  • A/B split testing & abandon cart recovery — conversion optimization built in
  • Flexible billing — subscriptions, split pay, buy now pay later, pay-as-you-like
  • Affiliate management — affiliate center, JV platform, automated payouts (Pro+)
  • Sales tax & VAT handling — automatic compliance, tax inclusive pricing
  • 40+ direct integrations — connect to your existing tools
  • Embeddable checkout — use ThriveCart on any website or platform
  • ThriveAcademy — community and course platform, now bundled into every plan

What ThriveCart Actually Costs in 2026

ThriveCart changed how it's sold, and it's simpler now. It's one bundled product — the checkout platform and ThriveAcademy (community + courses) together, on a single subscription. Pick a plan and start with a 30-day free trial. A limited one-time lifetime option still exists too, though it's not what I'd point most people to these days.

Great to get started — and more capable than most people assume. Unlimited products and funnels, 1-click upsells and downsells, A/B split testing, abandon cart recovery, and subscription billing.

What it's missing is the affiliate center and the advanced revenue tools — that's the reason most people step up to Pro+.

Everything in Pro+, plus white-glove onboarding, the ThriveAcademy Scale tier, and enterprise scale. Honestly, though — I don't recommend it. By the time you'd need a custom enterprise contract, you've usually outgrown what ThriveCart is good at, and anyone at that scale who's serious about payments will want a more dedicated solution than ThriveCart Enterprise.

A note on the lifetime option

A limited lifetime option is still available — ThriveCart Standard for a one-time $495 — but it's not something I'm actively recommending. The Standard feature set on its own isn't worth it for most people, and to be clear, it does not include ThriveAcademy. If you want the community and course platform, you want one of the subscription plans above.

Section 05 — ThriveAcademy

ThriveAcademy Now Comes Bundled — Here's What You Get at Each Tier.

ThriveAcademy (you'll also see it called ThriveCart Academy) is ThriveCart's community and course platform — launched in 2026 to replace ThriveCart Learn. It used to be sold as a separate subscription. It isn't anymore: it's now bundled into every ThriveCart plan at no extra cost, which quietly turned ThriveCart into a genuine Circle and Skool competitor. The only thing that changes by tier is how much Academy you get — so here's what's included at Standard, Pro+, and Enterprise.

Doug's Take on the Bundle

Now That Academy Is Included, the Only Real Question Is Which ThriveCart Tier You're On.

The old decision was "is the community platform worth another subscription on top of my checkout?" That question is gone. Academy is baked into the price now, so you're really just choosing a ThriveCart plan — the Academy tier comes along for the ride.

For most people that plan is Pro+. The affiliate center and advanced subscription tools are the reason most sellers are on ThriveCart in the first place, and the Academy Growth tier that rides along with it — 10,000 members, unlimited communities, 500 GB of video — is more than enough community platform for the vast majority of businesses.

Standard is a legitimate starting point if you don't need affiliates yet, and its Academy Starter tier still gives you real courses and a community up to 2,000 members. Enterprise (custom pricing) exists for very large operators, but I honestly don't steer people there — by the time you'd need a custom enterprise contract, you've usually outgrown what ThriveCart does best, and anyone serious about payments at that scale will want a more dedicated platform. For everyone else, the middle plan is where I point almost everyone.

Here's the part that matters: because the community platform is now included, you're no longer comparing ThriveAcademy head-to-head on price with Circle Professional ($89/mo) or Skool ($99/mo) as a standalone purchase. You're getting it bundled with your checkout from $47/mo. Circle and Skool still have more mature, community-first feature sets — if community is the product, look hard at them. But for anyone already building on ThriveCart, a community and course platform you don't pay extra for is a genuinely strong deal.

Section 06 — Fit

Is ThriveCart Right for You?

ThriveCart favors simplicity above all else. That's its greatest strength and its most meaningful limitation depending on what you need.

Good Fit

You should look at this

You want a simple, self-contained e-commerce and funnel platform.

ThriveCart is the most approachable checkout platform in its category. Connect Stripe, build your product, and your checkout with upsells and affiliates is running in an afternoon.

You're a beginner who needs to start selling without a complicated setup.

ThriveCart favors beginners more than any comparable platform without sacrificing the features experienced sellers need. Simplified by design, capable for everyone.

You want native affiliate management.

ThriveCart's affiliate center is one of its genuine strengths. Setting up an affiliate program, managing commissions, and processing payouts is cleaner here than in most alternatives at this price point.

You're already on ThriveCart and want a native community and course platform.

ThriveAcademy's native integration between your checkout, affiliates, and community is a real advantage no third-party connection can replicate.

You'd rather pay once than subscribe.

ThriveCart still offers a limited lifetime option — $495 one-time for ThriveCart Standard, no monthly bill. It doesn't include ThriveAcademy, and I don't actively recommend it, but if you genuinely hate recurring software costs and only need the basic checkout, it's there.

Not a Good Fit

Look elsewhere

You want a less opinionated platform.

ThriveCart is an off-the-shelf solution. That's what makes it simple, and it's also what limits it. If you need to customize the checkout experience significantly, you'll hit ThriveCart's rigidity in ways HighLevel would let you work around.

You need a full business operating system.

ThriveCart is a checkout and funnel platform. It has no CRM, email marketing, SMS, phone system, or reputation management. If you need those things alongside checkout, HighLevel is the more economical and comprehensive choice.

You're on WordPress and primarily need checkout.

SureCart is a more natural fit for the WordPress ecosystem — deeply integrated, no separate SaaS platform to manage alongside your site.

You need community to be the primary product.

If your business is primarily built around the community experience, Circle is a more mature and polished platform. ThriveAcademy is still early and Circle has a five-year head start on community-first features.

Section 07 — How It Compares

ThriveCart vs. the Platforms People Compare It To

Three comparisons worth making, each with a meaningfully different answer.

ThriveCart vs.

SureCart

SureCart wins inside WordPress. ThriveCart wins outside it.

SureCart does most of what ThriveCart does on the checkout and subscription side, but it's a WordPress plugin. That introduces all the complexity of WordPress hosting, security, updates, and plugin compatibility. If you're already running a WordPress site and want a checkout solution that integrates natively, SureCart is worth serious consideration.

If you're not on WordPress, SureCart isn't really in the conversation. ThriveCart as a standalone SaaS is meaningfully simpler to set up and maintain.

SureCart also doesn't have a community or course platform equivalent to ThriveAcademy — so if that's part of your evaluation, it's not a like-for-like comparison.

ThriveCart vs.

HighLevel Checkout

HighLevel is more comprehensive. ThriveCart is simpler. Your needs determine the winner.

HighLevel can do everything ThriveCart does on the checkout and funnel side — plus CRM, email marketing, SMS, funnels, a phone system, and reputation management. HighLevel is the more comprehensive platform.

The math is also interesting. ThriveCart Pro+ is $87/month and it bundles in a community and course platform. HighLevel starts at $97/month. If you purely need checkout and funnels, ThriveCart is usually more economical.

The key distinction is simplicity. For beginners who only need e-commerce and funnels: ThriveCart. For anyone who needs CRM, email, or broader marketing automation: HighLevel.

ThriveCart vs.

Stripe

Not a direct comparison — these are different kinds of tools.

Stripe is the payment processor that ThriveCart is built on top of. Comparing ThriveCart to Stripe is like comparing a built house to the lumber yard. Stripe handles the actual payment infrastructure. ThriveCart provides the checkout experience, the funnel builder, the affiliate management, and everything else that goes around the payment itself.

If you're asking "should I just use Stripe directly instead of ThriveCart" — Stripe directly requires custom development to build a comparable checkout experience. ThriveCart gives you that ready to use. They're not competing for the same job.

Section 08 — Academy Positioning

ThriveAcademy vs. Circle vs. Skool

Now that ThriveAcademy comes bundled with ThriveCart (from $47/mo), it lands squarely in the same conversation as Circle Professional ($89/mo) and Skool ($99/mo) — except you're getting it on top of your checkout rather than as a standalone bill. The comparison is inevitable, so here's how to think about the choice.

Choose Academy if

You're already a ThriveCart customer

The native integration between your payments and your community is a genuine advantage — no Zapier connections, no webhook maintenance, no seams between where someone pays and where they access content. If ThriveCart is already at the center of your business, Academy is the natural extension.

Choose Circle if

Community is the primary product

Circle has five years of community-first product development that ThriveAcademy is just starting to build toward. Circle's access groups, workflows, events integration, and overall member experience are more mature. If the community experience is what people are paying for, Circle is the more polished platform.

Choose Skool if

You want network discoverability

Skool has a built-in discovery marketplace and a strong community ecosystem around it. If you want to be findable within a platform's network and benefit from the cultural identity of being a Skool creator, that's something ThriveAcademy doesn't offer.

Section 09 — Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions I get asked most often about ThriveCart, with my real answers.

Is ThriveCart still worth buying in 2026?

Yes, with the right expectations. The platform went through a genuinely difficult period after multiple ownership changes, but it has stabilized and the new ownership has invested in meaningful product development — particularly ThriveAcademy. If your use case fits (e-commerce, funnels, affiliates, simplicity), ThriveCart is a solid choice. I went from not recommending it during the rough patch to recommending it again.

What happened to ThriveCart's lifetime deal?

The old one-time lifetime tiers (Pro+ and Ultimate Bundle) are gone. ThriveCart moved to a subscription where the checkout platform and ThriveAcademy are bundled together — Standard at $47/mo, Pro+ at $87/mo, each with a 30-day free trial, plus a custom-priced Enterprise tier I don't generally recommend. One limited lifetime option survives: ThriveCart Standard for a one-time $495 — but it does not include ThriveAcademy, and honestly I don't recommend it. The Standard feature set on its own isn't worth it for most people; if you want the community and course platform, take one of the subscription plans.

What is ThriveAcademy?

ThriveAcademy is ThriveCart's community and course delivery platform, launched in 2026. It replaces ThriveCart Learn (which is being deprecated) and adds a full community layer including discussions, events, gamification, and assessments. It's no longer a separate purchase — it's bundled into every ThriveCart plan: Standard includes the Academy Starter tier, Pro+ includes Growth, and Enterprise includes Scale. That bundling is what put ThriveCart in direct competition with Circle and Skool.

Is it called ThriveAcademy or ThriveCart Academy?

The official product name is ThriveAcademy. A lot of people call it ThriveCart Academy because it's built by ThriveCart and lives inside the ThriveCart ecosystem — same product, both names get used. When you see me write either one, I'm talking about the new community and course platform that replaced ThriveCart Learn in 2026.

Is ThriveCart Learn being shut down?

ThriveCart Learn and Learn+ are being deprecated — they will not receive further updates or new features. ThriveAcademy is the replacement, and it's now bundled into every ThriveCart plan. If you're an existing Ultimate Bundle owner who relied on Learn+, confirm with ThriveCart directly how your account transitions onto ThriveAcademy — the long-term details for grandfathered customers are still being clarified.

What's the difference between Standard and Pro+?

Standard is more capable than most reviews suggest — it includes unlimited products and funnels, 1-click upsells and downsells, A/B testing, abandon cart recovery, and subscription billing. What it lacks: the affiliate center and JV platform, multiple order bumps, subscription dunning, custom branding and domains, and advanced revenue tools like crypto payments and UTM tracking. The affiliate management is the most common reason to upgrade to Pro+.

Does ThriveCart replace HighLevel?

No. ThriveCart is a checkout and funnel platform. HighLevel is a full business operating system that includes CRM, email, SMS, funnels, a phone system, reputation management, and much more. ThriveCart handles the e-commerce layer cleanly. HighLevel handles the e-commerce layer plus most of your marketing and sales infrastructure. They can also work together — many people use ThriveCart for checkout and HighLevel for CRM and marketing.

Does ThriveCart work with Stripe?

Yes. Stripe is ThriveCart's primary payment processor. Your Stripe account handles the actual payment transactions and money lands in your Stripe account. ThriveCart is built on top of Stripe rather than being its own payment processor — which means your transaction history, customer billing relationships, and subscription data all live in your Stripe account. You own the billing relationships.

Does ThriveCart work with WordPress?

Yes. ThriveCart has an embeddable checkout that works on any website including WordPress, and direct integrations with many WordPress plugins. However, ThriveCart is not a WordPress plugin itself — it's a separate SaaS platform that you connect to your WordPress site. If you want a checkout solution that lives natively inside WordPress, SureCart is the more natural fit.

How does ThriveAcademy compare to Circle?

Because ThriveAcademy is now bundled with ThriveCart (from $47/mo), you're getting the community platform on top of your checkout instead of paying for it standalone the way you would with Circle Professional ($89/mo). On features, Circle has five years of community-first product development and more mature tools around community organization, access control, events, and the overall member experience. ThriveAcademy's advantage is native integration with ThriveCart's checkout and affiliate system — included in the price. If you're already on ThriveCart, Academy is a natural extension. If community is your primary product, Circle is more mature.

Is there a free trial for ThriveCart?

Yes — the subscription plans come with a 30-day free trial, so you can build out your checkout and community before you pay anything. And through my affiliate link you also get access to my Tech Help community space — ask questions anytime with direct access to me — plus my weekly live Q&A office hours where you can join live, share your screen, and get real answers on your ThriveCart setup.

What is ThriveCart's affiliate management like?

ThriveCart's affiliate management (available on Pro+ and above) is one of its genuine strengths. Setting up an affiliate program, configuring commission structures, generating affiliate links, managing affiliate accounts, and processing payouts via the JV platform is cleaner and more straightforward here than in most alternatives at this price point. It's one of the most common reasons people choose ThriveCart over competing checkout platforms.
